Unit 19 Mini-Ramp Review

Herbal Skateboards Skateboarding Video

January 5th, 2008

I received an email from a guy called Craig who said that they had an indoor, privately owned mini-ramp, just a few miles down the road from us and though we should go check it out. Sounded a little too good to be true, what with all the shit weather recently, so we got down there as soon as possible.

On arrival we went through these winding roads into what looked like a pretty ghetto industrial estate. When we got to the holder ‘Unti 19’, we went on in and saw this amazing ramp. As far as ‘homemade’ mini-ramps go, this is the best I have seen, the kind of thing you expect to find in a skatepark, paying £7 for a session! The structure is solid, with an MDF top surface, which I was told was going to be re-done in the next few days with ply. The coping is perfect, not too large or sticking out in anyway. And as for the transitions; spot on. These guys really did get everything right when they built this 4 or 5 months ago. From the pictures you will be able to see a smaller mini on the back, connected by a little roll in, leading you up to the extension. This smaller mini was not finished yet, looking a little sketchy, but only required a top layer to have it sorted. You could say that the two mini’s are Spined together, but I don’t think that’s strictly true because the gap is too large for a board to rock over.

I am not sure exactly how the entry/paying thing works in this place, or who owns it! But from what I can gather, there are a few of the old timers that got together to sort out the build an the space rental, using their own money, so some people get charged for entrance just to break even. You can pretty much only skate here with an invite, so I won’t reveal its whereabouts, but its south-coast and almost certainly the best skater built ramp I have seen! Well done to all the guys there. Everyone was sound and really sick on this ramp. I got some footy of the guys that were there when Keese and me went down there and met Adam, so be sure to check that out.
